Meet M. L. Buchman

Meet M. L. Buchman

BIO: M. L. “Matt” Buchman is the author of over 75 novels and 200 short stories. He’s also the editor of Thrill Ride. He’s flown and jumped out of planes, solo sailed a 50′ sailboat, and bicycled solo around the world. Just a few of the stranger adventures he brings to his fiction.

REAL-LIFE THRILLER MOMENT: While bicycling through India, I rounded a corner and slowed to watch a cute baby elephant playing in an open patch. Then Mama loomed up out of the woods and made a fake charge. I bolted to the far end of the clearing and she stopped. I slowed to reach for my camera. She didn’t like that at all and stamped a foot down so hard that I swear I could feel it vibrating through the ground and up my bike tires. When she charged again, I bolted, slamming hard up through gears until I was far gone.

WHO I ADMIRE: I began writing about the military when I was researching special operations. These aren’t folks in for a tour or two, they’re in for a career. And it’s not for king or country by the time they reach that level, it’s for each, for the team. It’s for the found-family they discovered there. I try to uphold that ideal with every tale I tell whether in or out of the military.

FAVORITE 2023 MEDIA MOMENT: I’m a science-fiction geek, among many other things. And I caught up with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds this year. Season 2 Episode 2 “Ad Astra Per Aspera” is when Number One goes on trial for hiding her race. The conflict between her desperate need for family and honor, and a deep-seated racial fear and prejudice was some of the best television I’ve seen in a long time.

WHAT’S COMING: Miranda Chase #14 Gryphon has just launched–the latest of my autistic air-crash investigator’s adventures. More at:
